The Cambridge Society for Early Music: Rising Again

We are happy to announce that our series of virtual concerts, Rising Again, continues! Last fall, the first concert, presented by harpsichordist Peter Sykes, was a great success! Beginning on July 12th, 2021 you may listen to beautifully performed and recorded concerts at home, at your convenience, and then — hear them again! Each concert will be available for one week after its release date. The concerts are

FREE OF CHARGE!

Recorded at John Weston’s breathtaking Futura Productions studio in Roslindale, Massachusetts, the atmosphere is elegant and the sound is gorgeous.

Concert II - July 12, 8 PM EDT (GMT-4): In Stile Moderno

Nathaniel Cox, lute
Agnes Coakley Cox,
 soprano
with Sophie Michaux, Corey Dalton Hart, Adam Simon, voices

“Come Again: Lute Songs of John Dowland and his Contemporaries”

Beloved and lesser-known lute songs take on a new dimension in this concert, which will be performed with facsimile table-book editions of the music. In Stile Moderno appears here for the first time as a four-voice ensemble with lute, bringing to life the poetry of Elizabethan England with the original pronunciation. Otherwise unheard rhymes and puns jump to the ear and a refreshingly direct and earthy timbre colors the language. Dowland’s virtuosic contrapuntal writing is showcased by the lute and four-voice texture.

Join us for a feast of whimsical, melancholy and touching music.

The concert can still be viewed here.

Concert III - July 18, 8 PM EDT (GMT-4): Les Bostonades

Shirley Hunt & Emily Walhout, violas da gamba
Akiko Enoki Sato, harpsichord

“Marin Marais: Music for Two Viols & Continuo”

Les Bostonades is a group deeply devoted to the styles and spirit of French Baroque music. They will present dazzling ensemble music of Marin Marais (1656-1728). Akiko Enoki Sato, harpsichord, director of the ensemble, will join Emily Walhout and Shirley Hunt, viols. We eagerly await their interpretations.

The concert will stream here.
